The controversial software entrepreneur John McAfee is in Portland to collaborate on a graphic novel about his life.

McAfee said he came to Portland because it is the home of the illustrator Chad Essley, with whom he has been collaborating the past seven months on a graphic nonfiction novel — a story in drawn pictures and word balloons — detailing his experiences in Belize. He said he will live in the city for the next 18 months and he’s looking to buy a house or a very large condominium. Eighteen months is how much time he needs to complete other projects about his life, including a screenplay and movie and another book.

The events of McAfee’s life last year ought to be enough to attract the public’s attention.

Authorities in Belize want to question him as “a person of interest” in the killing Nov. 11 last year of an American expatriate, Gregory Faull, whose home on the island of Ambergris Caye was near McAfee’s. In April last year, authorities raided property McAfee owned elsewhere in Belize for unlicensed drug manufacturing and possession of an unlicensed weapon.
