Gov. John Kitzhaber appointed a 14-member panel that will seek a compromise on logging.
The aim is to allow enough logging on the checkerboard tracts of forest managed by the BLM to provide timber counties with adequate revenue but not so much that it generates backlash from logging opponents.
The panel will build on a plan put forward by members of Oregon’s congressional delegation, Democratic representatives Peter DeFazio and Kurt Schrader and Republican Greg Walden, that would split the BLM lands between areas suitable for timber harvest and those that should be preserved for their natural and environmental value. The governor asked for a proposal that can be presented to Congress early next year.
