The USDA will buy pork, lamb, chicken, and catfish for federal food nutrition assistance programs such as food banks. In a news release, federal agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the purchases will help producers hit by the high cost of feed, which has soared as the drought hammers corn, soy and grain crops, primarily in the Midwest. As producers reduce herds because they can’t feed livestock, the market is flooded with meat and the price drops, another blow to farmers.
