Amazon started marketing data hosting services from its new facility near Boardman.
Operating through a holding company called Vadata, Amazon bought 80 acres of land at the Port of Morrow in 2008 for $1.6 million. Amazon planned a 120,000 square-foot data center, but stopped construction a year later for reasons it has never discussed.
Work resumed earlier this year, and The Oregonian reported last month that Amazon’s facility had quietly started up.
The new data center is in an enterprise zone, which exempts the expensive computers that run data centers from property taxes.
Amazon has two other data centers in the region — an adjoining backup facility at the Port of Morrow and another modular backup at the Port of Umatilla. Port of Morrow officials say Amazon has enough land to build five more data centers at the main site.
