After 30 years, Lochmead Dairy is reluctantly ending its use of reusable plastic bottles called merlon.

“We pride ourselves on being a sustainable company. We take a lot of pride in those bottles,” General Manager Stephanie Gibson said, adding she’s fielded dozens of customer calls. “People who use them are avid about them. They love them.”

Before the phase-out started earlier this year, Lochmead was selling one quarter of its milk in the plastic containers. The company doesn’t know precisely how many of its returnable plastic bottles are still out there in Lane County homes because it’s been buying and replacing bottles for decades. One estimate is 12,000 bottles, Gibson said.

The decision to drop the plastic bottles was difficult for the family, Gibson said. But an accumulation of business trends left it no other choice.
