Rep. Earl Blumenauer is calling for an end to direct subsidies for farmers, which would save $3 billion each year.

Blumenauer’s proposal is outlined in a 20-page report that he says will show the path for providing assistance to farmers who truly need it while improving the quality of the nation’s food and fiscal standing.

“Americans deserve a better Farm Bill,” Blumenauer says in the report. “Current agricultural policy spends too much money supporting large corporations, doesn’t adequately help the majority of small and mid-size farmers, and subsidizes manufactured food at the expense of fruits and vegetables.”
