The Senate approves a bill to allow rezoning of rural land for development.
The Oregon Senate has passed a land-use bill after amending it. The bill, which cautiously allows rezoning of rural land for development, moves back to the House for approval of the amendments.
Supporters say it offers a way to break the decades-old deadlock over which of Oregon’s rural lands should be open to development or saved for farming and forestry.
Opponents say it does nothing except continue state control over land use.
But on a 17-13 vote Monday, the Oregon Senate agreed with supporters and passed a bill incorporating many of the recommendations of a task force lawmakers set up four years ago to take a “big look” at Oregon’s land-use planning system.
