As large-scale solar projects are winding down in Oregon, REC Solar Inc. is expanding its commercial-scale business unit in Portland.

Many industry experts say that vast defunding of Oregon’s Business Energy Tax Credit program will lead to a major slowdown in the development of feasible, large-scale solar projects in the state unless the Legislature increases the budget or other incentives are devised.

REC Solar Inc., however, is ramping up a new commercial-scale business unit, based in Portland, and its leaders are confident that there will still be enough demand for commercial solar to keep it busy, regardless of the regional market.

“A lot of other companies see things very black and white,” said Andy Noel, the northwest regional manager at REC. “They think if there’s not certain business here, then they can’t operate in the market. But it’s not fair to say that the valve for commercial solar is completely shut off for 2012. There’s no question in my mind that all through 2012 we’ll be installing commercial solar systems.”
