Powell’s Books, Inc. is undergoing a major reorganization, as Emily Powell becomes chief executive officer and the company lays off eight corporate managers.

Powell takes the helm as the independent bookseller industry struggles to find its way as consumers cut back on spending and e-books continue to win over readers.

“While the changes are designed to set Powell’s on the path to success in a volatile industry where bookstores close on a daily basis, they are difficult to make, since they include the layoff of eight managers with many years of service to the company,” a Powell’s announcement said.

The reorganization comes as Ann Smith, chief executive of Powell’s operations, retires after 26 years with the company, the announcement said.
