A handful of frozen dessert makers from the Eugene-Springfield area are gaining national attention for their organic and nondairy choices.

Julie’s Organic, Ciao Bella, Turtle Mountain and Lochmead Dairy are among the local newsmakers.

Manufacturers say they’re poised for further growth, despite the recession-inspired frugality and increased health consciousness that threaten to clip sales, rapidly rising costs for commodities such as cream and sugar that eat away at profit margins, and fierce competition for shelf space against such industry giants as Nestlé and Unilever.

To have such a concentration of ice cream and frozen dessert makers in an area the size of Eugene-Springfield “is very, very unusual,” Doug Furlong said. “I’m not aware of anything that even remotely approaches a situation like this — to have this little city have all these major players in ice cream.”
