About 40% of college students in Oregon drop out before earning a degree, costing the state about $35 million in lost income and taxes yearly, a new study says.
Nationally, the institutes calculated that 493,000 students who started college in 2002 but failed to graduate within six years cost the nation about $3.8 billion in lost income, $566 million in lost federal taxes and $164 million in lost state taxes.Â
The report estimated the losses in salaries and taxes for dropouts from each college and university. For example, the costs were: $7.5 million for students who quit at Oregon State University, $6.8 million at the University of Oregon, $4.3 million at Portland State University, $1.2 million at the University of Portland, $845,000 at Linfield College, and $782 million at Lewis & Clark College.
