A gravel pit north of Cottage Grove is causing conflicts over land use and noise levels.

Lane County is suing the mine owner, Springfield-based Northwest Mineral Resources LLC, and the operator, Lake Oswego-based Oregon Mainline Paving LLC, in Lane County Circuit Court over a host of alleged land use infractions.

While the county and the businesses wrangle over which activities are allowed on the site and which are not, some neighbors say they are upset over the mine operating late into the night, disturbing their rural tranquillity.

The county alleges that rock crushing and other activities are “creating and threatening to continue to create noise” plainly audible to neighbors between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., in violation of the county noise ordinance. The disruptions, court documents say, are “contrary to the health, safety and welfare of the community.”
