Mentor Graphics Corp. beat earnings expectations with a second-quarter profit of $4.3 million.

This is in stark contrast to the company’s loss of $14.2 million in the second quarter last year.

Sales were up 14 percent to $213.7 million, driven by a 17 percent increase in systems and software revenues.

The company forecast third quarter revenues of about $245 million, earnings per share of approximately 18 cents according to generally accepted accounting principals, and earnings of 21 cents per share excluding expenses that management deems non-core. For the full year, the company forecasts revenues of approximately $1 billion, earnings of 68 cents per share, and earnings excluding special items of $1.03 per share.
