Started in Portland in 2006 by two doctors, ZoomCare recently opened its eighth Portland clinic and has plans to continue expanding.

“We see a clinic on every corner in every great neighborhood in this city,” says co-owner Dr. Dave Sanders. Down the road, he says, ZoomCare will go “global.”

Sanders and his partner, Dr. Albert DiPiero, tried to reform health care with a ballot measure. Now, they say, they are remaking health care from the bottom up. They run the fastest-growing chain of clinics in Portland, stressing low overhead and neighborhood access to make it easier for the uninsured — those with cash, at least — to get prompt care.

The chain has won many fans thanks to its customer-service focus, fixed-rate care and on-time appointments. But the firm has also drawn criticism over its denial of Medicaid and Medicare programs for low-income people and sparked complaints to the state from employees who say they worked long shifts without breaks.
