Earthquake Tech, a seismic retrofitting business based in Portland, is growing quickly after the recent quake in Japan.

Steve Gemmell started a renovation business in Portland in 1995. But a division, Earthquake Tech – which last year was a “one-man show,” according to Gemmell – is growing so quickly that he is thinking about franchising the business.

Experts predict that a major earthquake will hit the Pacific Northwest in the next 50 years, but any buildings constructed before 1995 were not required to account for seismicity. Thousands of homes, public and commercial buildings could benefit from upgrades.
