Facebook will begin construction on a second data center building in Prineville beginning in October.

The Prineville facility, which opened in April, is Facebook’s first company-owned data center. Previously, it had contracted with other companies to host the huge volumes of messages, photos and videos its members post on their individual pages.

From the beginning, Facebook held out the possibility of a second Prineville building on its 127-acre campus. But data centers consume huge amounts of energy, and the company has been working with the Bonneville Power Administration and the regional electric utility, PacifiCorp, to ensure an adequate supply of electricity.

Facebook announced its new expansion plans at the Prineville City Council meeting tonight. The company said that 1,400 people helped build the existing building in two phases – 250 people per day.

“This announcement helps to ensure the same type of activity for at least another full year,” the company said in its statement tonight.
