Comcast is switching to software from Portland video processors Elemental Technologies for its iPad and iPhone cable TV programming.
Elemental's technology converts Comcast's standard video signals to play on mobile devices. The downtown Portland company's software employs a powerful computer chip called a graphics processing unit (GPU) to "transcode" huge video files to stream on a variety on mobile devices.
"The evaluation process to win an account like Comcast is just unbelievable," said Sam Blackman, Elemental's co-founder and chief executive.
Comcast spent close to a year evaluating Elemental's technology, he said, testing it on 100,000 files.
