IKEA is partnering with ECOtality Inc. to install public electric vehicle charging stations at some of its Western U.S. stores.

The Portland store is in the running to get some of the EV stations.

The Swedish retailer will evaluate 10 stores in Oregon, Washington, California and Arizona — all states with early EV adopters — and will start installing and commissioning stations as early as this Fall. It’s the first time IKEA has installed charging stations at stores.

In a pilot program that lasts through 2012, IKEA will be responsible for preparing sites for installation, maintaining them and reporting charging information to ECOtality. ECOtality in turn will oversee installation and manage ongoing charger operations. Selected IKEA stores will have a minimum of two stations each.
