A Metro report says Hillsboro areas are the leading candidates for expanding the urban growth boundary this fall.
The areas in the report include 1,000 acres south of Hillsboro and 310 to the city’s north.
The south Hillsboro expansion would allow the city to add about 7,150 houses, apartments and condos, while the northern site is best for large industrial development, according to recommendations delivered Tuesday by Metro’s acting Chief Operating Officer Dan Cooper.
Hillsboro boomed to more than 90,000 people as high-tech firms made Washington County the self-described economic engine of Oregon over the past 15 years, and the recommendations to the Metro Council reflect that.
The northern industrial site is flat, has good access to U.S. 26 and complements Hillsboro’s existing high-tech manufacturing cluster, the report says. The city has a track record of delivering infrastructure — water, sewer, streets — to expansion areas, the report says, and is actively recruiting high-tech manufacturers.
