Verizon is turning on its high-speed LTE network across Portland, resulting in faster service for Verizon subscribers with 4G-equipped phones.

Verizon is turning on its high-speed LTE network across Portland, resulting in faster service for Verizon subscribers with 4G-equipped phones.

Verizon skipped Portland last year when it began the initial rollout of its high-speed, LTE network in other parts of the country. But in March, the company said Portland is among 145 metro areas due to have high-speed LTE service available by the end of 2011.

Many Verizon subscribers already have phones equipped for the higher speeds and can access them when they’re traveling outside Oregon. While they’re here, the gadgets default to the slower 3G network.
