The economic downturn fueled a revival in coupon clipping in Oregon and elsewhere, made even more popular by coupon blogs and the TLC series “Extreme Couponing.”

The deep recession that began in 2008 turbocharged a revival in couponing: Last year, companies distributed a record 332 billion consumer product coupons, according to NCH Marketing Services, an international marketing and coupon processing firm. And coupons — which have become a verb — have spread beyond consumer goods with seemingly everyone from pedicab companies to furniture reupholsterers offering them.

As interest in coupons has grown, so have the ways to collect them. Newspapers remain the primary source of coupons, according to The Nielsen Co., with 89 percent of couponers saying that’s where they get them. But consumers also are using media and corporate websites, electronic checkout coupons and, more recently, group buying sites such as Groupon and Living Social.
