By a large majority, the Senate voted into law House Bill 2726, a bill that will require chain restaurants to post calorie counts on their menus. The Senate’s vote means the bill goes on to Gov. Ted Kulongoski for approval, and he has promised his signature.

The bill, which Gov. Ted Kulongoski says he will sign into law, will not take effect until Jan. 1, 2011. It is modeled after a Multnomah County ordinance that took effect in March, but the bill pre-empts all local laws, including the county’s.

Sen. Alan Bates, D-Ashland, a physician, said posting calories on menus would help fight the state’s growing obesity epidemic and the related health problems of diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Cutting just 100 calories a day prevents weight gain for most people, he said.
