Nursery sales wilt


The housing recession hits the previously booming nursery industry.

The greenhouse and nursery industry has been prospering, but that trend may not continue. The amount of new-home construction is dropping, and with it the demand for landscaping.

In 2007, sales of greenhouse and nursery products from Oregon growers were $988 million. When the figures for 2008 are totaled, they probably will be smaller, experts said.

“Up until last year, there was rapid growth in sales in the Oregon nursery and greenhouse industry,” said Oregon Department of Agriculture spokesman Bruce Pokarney. “I would expect a decline in value for the first time in a long time.”

The nursery and greenhouse industry leads Oregon in terms of production value and sales, Pokarney said. About 20 percent of all Oregon agricultural products sold are nursery and greenhouse products.
