Economy helps colleges


Colleges see higher enrollment during an economic downturn.

Enrollment numbers are jumping at many Oregon colleges as the economy slides. Facing job losses or slower business, residents hope to expand their skills and increase their chances for work.

Community colleges and universities typically see a spike in applicants and enrollment when the economy falters. Mid-Valley institutions — from Western Oregon University to Chemeketa Community College — have seen enrollment bumps between 10 percent and 12 percent in the last year.

While many fall enrollment figures are not finalized, school officials expect student registration will surge in the coming months as people who recently lost their jobs seek refuge in continuing their education to become more attractive job candidates.
