U.S. Bancorp started a pilot program in the Portland area that gives loans to small business owners who use grocery store bank branches.

Across the country, U.S. Bancorp is training 3,000 branch managers at 773 in-store branches to work as part-time loan officers. They will use half of their workday to call or visit small-businesses with a loan sales pitch.

In the pilot program underway in the Portland area, bank officials are taking that a step further. They are introducing themselves in grocery store aisles, making loan loudspeaker announcements and soliciting customers in front of stores, according to Brian Bogatin the bank’s regional manager based in Portland.
