The Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center has chosen an offshore site near Newport to test new wave energy technologies.
The Center is a partnership between Oregon State University and the University of Washington, started in 2008.
Wave buoys have been controversial on the Oregon Coast, and officials said the site was chosen after two years of discussion with crabbers, fishermen, state agencies, wave energy developers and scientists.
The one square mile site is located two miles northwest of Yaquina Head on the central Oregon coast. The water is 150-180 feet deep with a sandy seafloor and exposed to unobstructed waves that travel thousands of miles across the Pacific. The test site is funded by the state of Oregon and the U.S. Department of Energy.
