Paul Allen said that when he began writing his life story he didn’t know if he would live long enough to finish it.

The 58-year-old said working on his memoir “Idea Man,” available this week, was good therapy after he was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2009, and he wanted to write a candid account because “this is my one shot” at getting it right.

“It was unclear if I was going to see the publication of the book when I was first diagnosed,” Allen said from his office in Seattle. “Fortunately, I had a great response to the chemotherapy regimen and took a turn for the best, but I didn’t know that when I started.”
