Eugene-Springfield area specialists who work with new business owners say they are seeing an increase in businesses started by women, veterans and retirees.
Gary Smith, small-business management instructor at Lane Community College’s small-business development center, said he has noticed more women joining his classes.
“I think there’s no gender difference right now,” he said. “The incoming class is slightly tilted toward more women than men.”
That contrasts sharply with national figures, which show the gap widening, with increasingly more male than female entrepreneurs. The rate of entrepreneurial activity among men climbed from 2009 to 2010, while it slipped for women, according to figures recently released by the Kauffman Foundation for Entrepreneurship.
