Truitt Bros. Inc. will lay off about 100 employees at its Salem food packing plant by the end of April.

Truitt Bros. has a traditional cannery, where foods are packed in metal cans, but it also packs foods in flexible pouches and trays that it calls “special products.”

The special products have been the fastest growing part of the company’s business.

But the slow economy has prompted it to scale back operations at one of two Salem plants where it makes the special products line, [company co-owner David] Truitt said.
