Corvallis-based NuScale Power will lay off most of its remaining 70 employees today.

The company’s primary backer is facing up to 70 years in prison for running a Ponzi scheme.

The company will continue operating with a core group of about 15 to 20 executives and other key personnel as it seeks fresh investment, chief marketing officer Bruce Landrey said this morning.

Friday’s layoffs come just as interest in NuScale’s innovative nuclear reactor technology spikes. Some consider it a safer alternative to existing nuclear reactors, and an especially appealing option in the wake of Japan’s nuclear catastrophe.
