Steven Smith Teamaker, in an old red-brick building, has been open more than a year, though its small sign went up only a few months ago. Even now the place is easy to miss, though it should rank high on any list of Portland’s quirky-best artisan outlets.
The new operation has no outside investors. The clever labeling, packaging and display pieces for the bagged, bulk and bottled Smith Tea are plainly the evolution of Smith’s long experience and wise collaborations. Steven Smith Tea — fresh and fragrant — is showing up at local restaurants and stores, and can also be found at gourmet shops in New York City. Smith has recently been fretting about filling a huge first order — 12,000 boxes — for national retailer Williams-Sonoma.
