Fred Meyer Stores Inc. agreed to pay wage increases and pension benefits to veterans who work or have worked for the company.

The issue came about after veterans who worked for the store complained about not receiving wage increases or benefits while they were deployed.

Melinda Merrill, the grocer’s spokeswoman, said Fred Meyer had calculated its step wage increases and pension benefits based on the time its hourly employees work in its facilities. She said Fred Meyer had been told its practice was perfectly legal.
