In its biggest U.S. project yet, SolarWorld will make enough solar cells at its Hillsboro plant to power over 2,000 Los Angeles homes.
The $32 million project will take the equivalent of 10 days of production at the plant.
The project announced Wednesday ranks in the midrange of utility-scale solar systems completed nationally. That’s fine with Raju Yenamandra, SolarWorld’s vice president for sales in the Americas, who says solar is not about size. He would rather distribute solar panels on rooftops to generate power where it’s used than cover deserts with vast solar arrays that clutter the environment and the view.
Yenamandra says SolarWorld is working with its customer, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, to develop the 11.6 megawatt system. The nation’s largest municipal utility employs enough workers to respond to peak energy demand; during slower periods, he said, managers can assign workers to install the solar panels.
