As Congress works on a new budget this week, cuts will affect Oregon in a number of ways.

A suicide hotline run by Oregon Partnership may run out of money because an expected $200,000 earmark has evaporated.

Judy Cushing, Oregon Partnership’s president and CEO, is caught in the middle. Without federal funding, she says she will be “scrambling” to find ways to keep the 24-hour suicide hotline and drug and alcohol services running. Last year, professional and volunteer staffers at her nonprofit handled 19,000 calls, triple the number from 2008. In December, she said, trained suicide counselors prevented 28 likely suicides.
