The cuts appear to mainly affect front-line state workers, and most of the jobs pinpointed so far are located in Salem.
For example, custodians take up two-thirds of the jobs to be cut at the Oregon Department of Administrative Services. Most of the custodians work cleaning state buildings in Salem.
“I just do not understand why they pick on the little guy all the time,” said Alvin Mason, a northeast Salem resident and one of the custodians who could lose their jobs. “They have some middle-management people out there who do next to nothing and get all this money for it. One of them would be like three of us, in terms of compensation.”
