Mayor Sam Adams will travel to Spain to convince Iberdrola Renewables to keep its North American headquarters in Portland.
The renewable energy development company has outgrown its current offices and is looking to relocate its local staff of about 350.
City officials, however, became concerned after learning that in recent months Iberdrola’s Spanish parent, Iberdrola Renovables S.A., decided the U.S. headquarters decision would be better made in Spain rather than in Portland.
Losing Iberdrola would be another major blow to Portland’s corporate scene after losing the headquarters of steel-maker Evraz Inc. N.A. to Chicago last month.
The hope is that the Iberdrola story ends up similar to that of another renewable energy giant, Dutch wind turbine-maker Vestas A/S, which considered options outside of Portland for its U.S. headquarters before deciding in August to renovate the former Meier & Frank warehouse building in the Pearl District as its U.S. home base.
