Merchants and customers in the suburbs are jumping on the social buying bandwagon, joining sites such as Groupon and Sharing Spree.

The concept is simple: Shoppers sign up to receive a daily e-mail touting the day’s bargain, often 50 to 90 percent off a product or service in the local area. The catch is that the shopper must purchase the bargain within a defined time limit, typically a day. Sometimes a certain number of customers have to sign up before the deal is “on.”

Sharing Spree, which established its West Linn office in July, has carved a niche for itself by donating a percentage of its profits to community organizations, including school foundations in Lake Oswego, Sherwood, Beaverton and Hillsboro, as well as national organizations with a local presence, like Dress for Success and Ronald McDonald House.

While the merchants and charities benefit, so do the shoppers. Jenn Koenig of Wilsonville has purchased a number of Sharing Spree offers, including the Baja Fresh deal and spa services. “I don’t normally treat myself to all of that pampering, but the price lures me in and I can also justify that I am helping [Music and Arts Partners],” she said.
