However, the University of Oregon study found that there are many hurdles to be cleared first.
The annual market for food in Lane County is $1.17 billion, researchers found, but they estimated less than 5 percent of that is produced locally.
One of the big problems is that many of the farms in Lane County are small and that many of the food buyers are big — schools, hospitals and grocery chains, who usually prefer to buy from a central distributor rather than dozens of individual farms, the study found.
