After almost 50 years in business, the Oregon Board of Cosmetology is requiring 82-year-old barber Dale Smith to go back to school.
Smith didn’t realize his license expired in 2006, and was shut down by the board on January 14. He is out of business until he re-takes and passes the barbering practical examination.
Current laws and rules also require Smith to take and pass any written examinations approved by the board. While the board voted 4-2 to approve the barbering written examination Smith passed in 1957, it is requiring him to take and pass the current Oregon laws and rules written examination.
“This was obviously a difficult decision for the board to make,” said Randy Everitt, director of the Oregon Health Licensing Agency, the state consumer protection agency that oversees the board of cosmetology and other health and related professions. “While we empathize with Dale, the board had to base its decision on legally sound principles and equitable treatment of all licensees.”
