In today’s BCS National Championship game, it’s not only Oregon vs. Auburn, but also Nike vs. Under Armour.

Nike outfits the Ducks (who benefit enormously from Chairman Phil Knight’s largesse), while Under Armour has outfitted the Tigers since 2005.

The two football programs have never played each other. But ever since former University of Maryland football player and Under Armour founder Kevin Plank launched his line of compression-fitting undergarments 15 years ago, his upstart has had its sights on the behemoth that is Nike.

And in a way, Under Armour already is a winner after seeing one of only 10 teams it outfits make it onto the biggest stage in college football. The University of Oregon is one of about 300 colleges and universities that wear the Swoosh, though the affiliation is enhanced by the blood ties to Nike co-founder and former University of Oregon middle distance runner Phil Knight.
