Portland Mayor Sam Adams is trying to bring a Costco store to the site of the Portland Public Schools headquarters near the Rose Quarter.
So far, Mayor Adams is just rumored to be in preliminary talks with developer Mark Edlen.
Portland officials have considered the eight-acre school site as a home for a baseball stadium, Columbia Sportswear's headquarters or condo towers. With developers searching for big-box sites in central Portland, this deal could join Adams' renewed push to revive the Rose Quarter and lower North Broadway.
The deal faces many hurdles, however. School officials say they would be willing to move their offices but only if the deal paid the cost of new ones. The city also would expect to face resistance from residents who take pride in Portland's independent, green spirit and object to the traffic and vast parking lots that come with big boxes.
