As part of the Rose Quarter redevelopment, the Portland City Council is considering adding “Veteran” to the Memorial Coliseum’s name.

Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum was one name considered before the coliseum’s opening five decades ago.

“One thing we’ve heard loud and clear during our meetings with veterans, was a desire to formally rename the building Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Mayor Adams couldn’t agree more,” Adams aide Amy Ruiz wrote in a Dec. 29 e-mail to people involved in the process.

The coliseum was financed by the sale of $8 million in public bonds approved by Portland voters in 1954. According to Ruiz, changing the name is especially appropriate at this time because the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the coliseum is Jan. 8.
