A Portland startup wants to help you pick out what bar to go to–by allowing you to check out a live video stream on your smart phone.

What Spot Now? is installing cameras in bars and restaurants, who can in turn offer deals attached to those images.

“None of them want to discount, but all of them know they have to do things to drive customers,” said Luke Sontag, WSN’s chief executive. “Why not only do it when you’re slow?”

WSN hopes its patented video technology and integrated online platform will help it stand out, both with merchants and with prospective customers.

Its cameras take photos every 15 seconds — blurring the image slightly to obscure individual faces. Those cameras measure traffic automatically to determine when a business is slow, offering deals only at down times.
