Marylou Alderman knits and sells Christmas stockings on Etsy.com, turning her hobby into a successful business.
Santa’s Stocking Works is one of about 170,000 “shops” listed on Etsy.com, but the tiny business is getting much attention. A combination of old-fashioned skills, e-commerce and a bit of luck has Alderman knitting as fast as she can to fill orders.
“It’s gotten crazy over the last couple of years,” she said.
Alderman’s sales have taken a big jump thanks to some national publicity. One of her lime-green and cherry-red creations was featured in an article about Christmas Stockings in the “2010 Christmas Ideas Magazine” published by Better Homes & Gardens.
