For the fourth year in a row, population growth has been sluggish in Oregon due to a slowed birthrate and fewer people moving to Oregon.

This is according to a report by the Population Research Center at Portland State University.
Estimates as of July 1 show Oregon’s population increased by 20,730 people, or 0.5 percent, in the previous 12 months to 3,844,195. Most of those people ended up in Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Marion and Deschutes counties, the report says.
Risa Proehl, the center’s population estimates program manager, said the reason for the lid on population growth is the lingering recession.
“When people don’t have much money, there’s less movement; they’re moving around less,” she said.
