Oregon gained 7,600 jobs, yet the state’s unemployment rate is still stuck at 10.5%.
The increase in people filing for unemployment continues to offset the new jobs being created in the private sector, thus the stagnant unemployment rate.
Oregon’s job increase is encouraging in part because it came in multiple sectors, ranging from education and health services to trade, transportation and utilities. The private sector gained 4,100 jobs and government added 3,500 during the month, seasonally adjusted.
“The new jobs did not change the unemployment rate, however,” said Nick Beleiciks, an Oregon Employment Department economist.
Oregon’s jobless rate has been stuck in the same narrow range for a year. Economists see no one sector poised to drive the state back to prosperity, as the housing industry had done after previous recessions. For now, the state remains lodged almost a percentage point above the national unemployment rate, which was 9.6 percent in September and October.
