Port of Astoria’s new tenant, Westerlund Log Handlers, begins log exports this week with a partial shipment to South Korea.
By December, Westerlund plans to export one ship of Northwest logs from Astoria to China each month.
A partial first shipment is set to be loaded to go to South Korea at the beginning of November, between Nov. 2 and Nov. 5. This first run is a dry run, hence a “partial” shipment – about 1 million to 1.5 million board feet, one third, [vice president with Westerlund Log Handlers Roger] Nance said, of what would constitute a full shipment.
The Port is “back in the cargo business,” [Port Director Jack Crider] said, referring to the Westerlund log operations.
“We’re the closest port to Korea and we have a long maritime history with them,” he said after the meeting. “We’re soliciting potential shippers.”
