Both Republican candidate Chris Telfer and Democratic candidate Ted Wheeler have financial expertise that would help them become Oregon’s chief financial officer.

With the current disheveled state of Oregon’s budget, the role of state treasurer stands poised to have a higher profile and more influence than in past years.

Chris Telfer, a first term Republican state senator from Bend, has made her career as a certified public accountant the cornerstone of her campaign. She’s selling herself as the change agent the Legislature needs to dive deep into agency budgets, identify savings and prioritize spending.

[Ted] Wheeler thinks Treasury’s role in the state’s budget crisis is to watchdog the fiscal fundamentals, and promote structural changes and investments that make long term economic sense. Two weeks ago, he sent up the red flag on Oregon’s debt capacity, advising the Legislature to halt further general fund borrowing until its revenues recover in order to preserve the state’s credit rating.
