Shopping centers in Lane County are having trouble filling empty storefronts.

This is putting pressure on landlords as the slump continues.

National retailers such as Circuit City, Hollywood Video, Gottschalks and Blockbuster have added empty store fronts as have long-standing local businesses that closed, or retreated, in the face of the recession including Zona Boutique, Latham’s Luggage and Gifts and Bene Gourmet Pizza.

Strip mall developers have learned to pencil prolonged vacancies of a store front or two into their calculations. Brokers are hustling when any retailer shows an interest in an empty space. Some landlords are hanging on by their teeth because of half- or three-quarters empty buildings.
