When the University of Oregon football team is doing well, sales go up for local retailers selling Duck merchandise.

Springfield-based Identity by Sew On was recently able to boost employment at its screen printed and embroidered apparel company from 20 to 35.

“It is interesting that when they are doing better we tend to sell considerably more,” said Steve Hirons, vice president of the family-­owned Hirons drugstores. “I think I do stock up more when the team is expected to do well and when they continue to do well. We tend to reorder sooner so we don’t run out of stock.”

Hirons said there’s also something about supporting the hometown team, especially when it also supports local businesses. Because much of the Duck merchandise is manufactured locally, much of the profits stay in the community, particularly when they’re bought at locally owned stores such as his, he said.
